OFA Companion Animal Eye Registry (CAER) Exams

Dr. Paul Scherlie, VMD, DACVO - Ophthalmology will be performing OFA CAER exams, an ophthalmic examination performed by American College of Veterinary Ophthalmologist (ACVO) Diplomates, to assess dogs for the presence or absence of observable hereditary eye disease.

Eye certifications are an important part of the routine health screenings practiced by responsible dog breeders to produce healthy puppies.

Dogs with normal exam results will receive OFA eye certification numbers that are valid for one year.

Health Clinic Reminders

Forms and your appointment time(s) will be included in your registration packet. Every effort will be made to accommodate rescheduling requests due to event conflicts, but this can’t be guaranteed.

Please arrive 10-15 minutes prior to the exam to dilate your dog’s pupils. It is recommended that the examination be performed after your dog has completed judging for the day. The effect of the eye drops lasts approximately 3 hours. NOTE: Cancellations without notice (i.e. no shows) will not be refunded.

Please remember to bring your dog’s AKC registration number, date of birth, and tattoo/ microchip/DNA information. A microchip scanner will be on hand as well.

Fees cover evaluations and forms only; submission of results to OFA requires additional fees payable directly to OFA

Breeders and owners are encouraged to complete health and genetic testing available through many sources, and to record that information in the Berner-Garde database at https://www.bernergarde.org/DB/Default.
